Harrogate’s illustrious history of health-giving water.

The first mineral spring in Harrogate was discovered in 1571 by William Slingsby, who found that water from the Twewit Well possessed medicinal properties.

c16th – c18th
The town become known as “The English Spa” in the Georgian Era, the first use of “Spa” in the UK.
The waters were a popular health treatment, and the influx of wealthy visitors contributed significantly to the wealth of the town.

Harrogate is the first place in Britain to bottle water. Research shows that Harrogate has been bottling water continually ever since.

Arx Celebris Fontibus, the town motto at its 1884 Charter of Incorporation, means “A Citadel Famous For Its Springs”. This is inscribed on the Royal Pump Room

Harrogate is unique in the world, having 88 springs within a 2 mile radius of the town centre. Harrogate water kept the troops hydrated from England to Bombay during WW1.

Harrogate Water Brands is created to carry the mantle of Harrogate’s Production of naturally sourced bottled spring water.

Harrogate Water Brands continues to invest heavily in new state-of-the-art production equipment, developing Harrogate Spring Water as a global brand. More Harrogate water is now bottled and distributed than there has ever been in its history.
